How to Use This Chart

Match your generator size to the table. Most generators run most efficiently at 70-80% load. Running below 50% load causes wet stacking and increased fuel consumption per kilowatt produced.

Daily fuel cost calculation: Multiply the consumption rate (L/hr) by hours run and current diesel price. As of 2026, diesel in Malaysia costs approximately RM3.05 per litre (Euro 5 B10/B20).

Monthly estimate: Calculate daily cost, then multiply by 30 days. Always add a 10% buffer for variability in fuel quality, load fluctuations, and environmental factors.

Example: A 100kVA generator at 75% load consumes 12.0 L/hr. Running 8 hours daily uses 96 litres. Daily cost: 96L × RM3.05 = RM292.80. Monthly: RM292.80 × 30 days = RM8,784.

Factors That Affect Fuel Consumption

1. Load Percentage — Generators achieve optimal efficiency at 70-90% load. Running below 30% causes wet stacking (unburned fuel accumulation), increasing consumption per kW and damaging the engine. Always match generator size to your actual load.

2. Engine Age & Condition — Worn piston rings, valve wear, and carbon buildup increase fuel consumption by 5-15%. Regular maintenance (oil changes, filter replacement, injector cleaning) preserves efficiency. Older engines naturally consume more fuel.

3. Fuel Quality — Malaysian diesel specifications (Euro 5 B10/B20) affect combustion efficiency. Contaminated fuel or incorrect biodiesel blends increase consumption and cause injector problems. Use fuel from reliable suppliers with proper filtration.

4. Ambient Temperature — Malaysia’s tropical climate (30-35°C average) means cooling fans run harder, adding 2-3% to fuel consumption. Proper ventilation and shade around the generator reduces this impact. Extreme heat also degrades oil faster.

5. Altitude — At sea level (most of Malaysia), generators operate at rated output. Highland areas like Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands lose 1% efficiency per 100 meters above 500 meters elevation. Thin air reduces combustion efficiency.

6. Maintenance — Clogged air filters, dirty fuel filters, worn injectors, and degraded oil can increase fuel consumption by 10-20%. Neglected generators work harder to produce the same power. Regular servicing is essential for efficiency.

Fuel Cost Calculation Example

Let’s calculate the monthly fuel cost for a 100kVA generator running 8 hours per day at 75% load (typical commercial backup scenario):

Step 1: Find consumption rate from chart: 100kVA at 75% load = 12.0 L/hr

Step 2: Calculate daily consumption: 12.0 L/hr × 8 hours = 96 litres/day

Step 3: Calculate daily fuel cost: 96L × RM3.05 = RM292.80/day

Step 4: Calculate monthly cost: RM292.80 × 30 days = RM8,784/month

Add 10% buffer: RM8,784 + RM878 = RM9,662 estimated monthly cost

* Actual consumption may vary ±10% based on factors listed above. This example uses current Malaysian diesel price (RM3.05/L as of 2026).

Fuel Storage Planning

Minimum storage rule: Store at least 3 days of fuel for backup power applications. Using our 100kVA example at 75% load: 96L/day × 3 days = 288 litres minimum tank capacity.

Bunded tanks required: For installations with storage capacity above 500 litres, Malaysian environmental regulations require bunded tanks (double-walled containment) to prevent soil contamination from leaks.

Auto-refill contracts: For remote sites or critical applications, consider automated fuel delivery contracts. Suppliers monitor tank levels and refill before you run dry. Essential for data centers and hospitals.

Fuel shelf life: Diesel degrades over time. Add fuel stabilizer if storing for more than 6 months. Stale fuel clogs filters and damages injectors. Rotate fuel stock annually for backup generators that run infrequently.
