Power Challenges in the Oil & Gas Industry

The oil and gas sector operates in some of the most demanding environments on Earth. Standard commercial generators are not built for these conditions.

Offshore Platforms: Face corrosive salt air, limited deck space, strict weight restrictions, and constant motion from waves. Every kilogram matters — compact, lightweight generators are essential.

Refineries: Operate in hazardous zones where standard electrical equipment can ignite flammable vapours. Explosion-proof certification is not optional.

Pipeline Stations: Located in remote areas with no grid access. Unattended operation is essential — generators must run for months without manual intervention.

FPSO Vessels and AHTS Tugs: Need marine-grade power that handles pitch, roll, and vibration. Class society approval (DNV, ABS, BV) required.

Oil and gas generators require specialized features: hazardous area certification (Zone 1/Zone 2), corrosion-resistant materials (marine-grade aluminum, stainless steel), compact footprint for space-constrained platforms, remote monitoring capability, and continuous duty ratings for 24/7 operation between maintenance intervals.

Hazardous Area Classifications Explained

Hazardous areas are classified based on the frequency and duration of explosive atmospheres:

Zone 0

Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods. Highest risk level. Generators typically not installed here.

Zone 1

Explosive atmosphere likely during normal operation. Requires Ex d (flameproof) equipment. Most generator installations avoid Zone 1.

Zone 2

Explosive atmosphere not likely, but possible if abnormal. Most generator installations in oil & gas fall under Zone 2.

Zone 2 certified generators feature non-sparking design (Ex nA), sealed components to prevent gas ingress, temperature class T3 or T4 (surface temperature limits), and increased safety enclosures. The generator must be certified as a complete unit — not just individual components.

Certifications to look for: ATEX (European), IECEx (international), and local JKKP approval (Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia).

Oil & Gas Generator Specifications

Continuous Duty Ratings

Designed for 24/7 operation, not just standby. Oil & gas generators run continuously for months between planned maintenance. Prime power ratings ensure reliable performance under sustained load.

Fuel Compatibility

Diesel primary fuel for reliability and energy density. Natural gas option for cleaner emissions where available. Dual-fuel configurations provide flexibility and redundancy.

Remote Monitoring

SCADA integration via Modbus TCP. Real-time alerts for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and generator status. Critical for unmanned offshore platforms.

Maintenance Access

Containerised modules for easy swap-out during maintenance. Planned maintenance every 500-1000 hours. Quick-change filters and accessible service points reduce downtime.

Environmental Protection

Spill containment with bunded fuel trays. Secondary containment for oil and coolant. Emission controls for environmental compliance in sensitive areas.

Corrosion Resistance

Marine-grade aluminum canopies with powder coating. Stainless steel fasteners and hardware. Sacrificial anodes for offshore salt air environments.

Oil & Gas Generator Applications

Offshore Platforms

Power for living quarters, drilling equipment, pumps, and safety systems. Compact footprint essential for limited deck space. Zone 2 certified and corrosion-resistant for harsh marine environments.

Onshore Refineries

Backup power for critical processes, emergency shutdown systems, and fire pumps. Must handle sudden load steps during emergencies. Hazardous area certification mandatory for refinery installation.

FPSO/AHTS Vessels

Marine-grade generators for propulsion support, cargo handling, and crew facilities. Class society approved (DNV, ABS, BV). Built to handle pitch, roll, and vibration at sea.

Pipeline Pumping Stations

Prime power at remote locations along oil & gas pipelines. Unattended operation with satellite monitoring and remote control. Solar-hybrid options for reduced fuel consumption.
